Motivational Interviewing

Assignment’s description:

In a team of two, we recorded and conducted a counseling session with each other (taking turn playing role of a health counselor and a troubled client) using the techniques and stages in Motivational Interviewing (MI). Afterwards, we each evaluated our videos and wrote a thorough paper about what we could have done better in improving on our future MI skills.

What I learned:

I learned how to work well and think fast on my feet when interacting with a client. I came to understand how careful a counselor should be in listening, conversing, and contributing in helping a client in need.

Reflection to the assignment:

For this project, I got the chance present all of the MI skills that I practiced in my NFSC 365 class and implemented them into a 30-minute MI intervention with a student acting as a client that wanted to change her diet. Although I didn’t perfect my MI techniques as a counselor, I was able to learn and observed my strengths and weaknesses after viewing and listening to myself.

Relevance to the profession: This whole project is very important when it comes to the field of nutrition because it helps us, nutrition professionals, to be better listeners towards our clients. By interacting with them through the techniques of MI we are able to connect and welcome them in making positive changes relating to their health.
