Center for Healthy Communities Project:

Eat Right When Money's Tight (Oroville)

Assignment’s description:

Managers within various housing facilities in Oroville, were contacted and asked to allow for the Center for Healthy Communities (CHC) to promote our 1-hour nutrition lesson along with a cooking demonstration called Eat Right When Money’s Tight (ERWMT) for their residents.

What I learned:

In this project, I learned how to present the program that I work for, CHC and myself professionally. Through this experience, I gained strong connections with various programs such as the Hmong Cultural Center of Butte County, Park Place, Winston Garden, and Oroville Manor. I also learned about the importance of time management, communication, and teamwork.

Reflection to assignment:

A lot of time was dedicated to this assignment because of the many regulations and planning involved with getting four different sites ready for the ERWMT classes. After many phone calls, site visits, and advertisement efforts, all of the hard work paid off. We, as a team, were able to make these four sites with my program’s agenda and all of the residents enjoy our lessons and cooking demonstration.

Relevance to the profession:

This project intertwines with my profession because within my career field I will be expected to work with programs, communities, and individuals with interests in nutrition. It’s my job to engage, respect, and work well with people in order to advocate the importance of nutrition education.
