Center for Healthy Communities Project:

Kid's Farmer's Market

Assignment’s description:

I helped manage a free Farmer’s Market (afterschool) for middle-school children at Central Middle School in Oroville. My job was to find and prepare interns and staff from our program to drive to Oroville to set and clean up after each event.

What I learned:

After completing this assignment, I learned about the importance of food insecurity in children and how effective environment affects the way kids are being raised along some management skills. Being one of the main leaders in making this event happen, I was responsible for finding a good and dedicated team driving from Chico to Oroville on Fridays. I learned a lot about planning ahead and earned great leadership skills with this project.

Reflection to assignment:

Nutrition and its connection with the environment plays a huge role in an individual’s life. At the school in Oroville, the kids didn’t have any access to any fresh produce store nearby and was mostly surrounded by fast food. Whenever my team and I showed up with free produce to give to the kids, they would excitedly take in handful of fruits and vegetables to fill up their bags and backpack to bring home to their family.

Relevance to the profession:

With this project, my team and I showed kids the importance and benefits of shopping for fresh produce for themselves and their family.
